Reviens à Youkali
« Komm nach Youkali » A musical show built around the songs of Kurt Weill and the texts of Bertolt Brecht
Romy, a young Berlin cabaret singer, and Johnny, her pianist, share an unconditional love. In their cabaret they create, sing and dance: there, they feel free. But around them, political turmoil is spreading. Minorities are singled out, freedom of expression is trampled on, fear takes hold. Johnny is swept away by the propaganda; Romy, with all her humanity, tries in vain to remind him of the ideal of freedom they once shared.
Through the songs of Kurt Weill and the texts of Bertolt Brecht – Surabaya Johnny, Mackie Messer, Bilbao, J’attends un navire, Youkali… – the show tells the story of this great love and its decline, at the heart of a troubled era.
