The Forbidden Songs
In 1933, Kurt Weill’s music is banned, Bertolt Brecht’s books are burned, and both artists set off into exile. The Forbidden Songs weaves together five scenes from Fear and Misery of the Third Reich and eight songs by Weill, from Mackie Messer to Youkali. An actress, an actor, a cello and a piano tell of the fear that settles into homes, of betrayal, of departure, and of the dream of a country that does not exist.
